A foundation course for science majors emphasizing the concepts of structure and function in biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels. Topics include biochemistry, biochemical and molecular evolution, cell function, respiration, photosynthesis, genetics and molecular biology. Lectures three hours per week. NOTE: BIOL 111, BIOL 111L, BIOL 112, BIOL 112L are prerequisites for most upper-division biology courses. Students who have completed BIOL 101, BIOL 102, BIOL 101L, BIOL 102L, and who wish to take upper-division biology courses without completing BIOL 111, BIOL 112, BIOL 111L, BIOL 112L, may do so only with permission of the department.
