Cultural Studies as a field broadens a traditional focus on literary objects in the English classroom to include a wider range of cultural objects. A cultural studies approach employs interdisciplinary engagement to critically examine a range of questions related to race, class, ability, citizenship, gender, and/or sexuality.

ENGL 498: Eportfolio Workshop

This course will focus on the development of a professional eportfolio for a specific audience: including employers, internship coordinators, and graduate admissions committees. Students in this one-hour course will select and curate a writing sample that represents their skills and development as writers. As part of this course, students will become familiar with key concepts in eportfolio making (e.g., purpose, audience, identity, representation, media, and reflection) and basic principles of visual design. No web design experience is needed to successfully complete the course.

ENGL 499: Bachelor's Essay

A year-long research and writing project done during the senior year under the close supervision of a faculty member from the department. To qualify, a student must have a GPA of 3.25 in the major; have completed 60 credit hours of coursework, including ENGL 299; and have not exceeded 9 credit hours of independent study (including tutorials and independent studies). Students must take the initiative in seeking a faculty supervisor to help in both the design and the direction of the project. A proposal must be submitted to the department and approved prior to registration for the course. Students will confer regularly with their faculty supervisor both on the progress of their research and on the draft of their paper. The finished paper will normally be 50 or more pages and will reflect detailed research in the field. Semester one of a two semester intensive research and writing course for accomplished and motivated upper-level students under the close supervision of a faculty member in the department or program. Students must take the initiative in seeking a faculty member to help in the design and supervision of the project. This is an individual enrollment course, and registration is carried out through consultation with the faculty mentor. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor and Department/Program approval prior to registration. Individual departments or programs may prescribe particular requirements for eligibility for the bachelor's essay, particular procedures for the approval of proposals, and/or particular guidelines for the projects themselves. ENGL 110 or equivalent and ENGL 299; majors only; GPA 3.250 in the major; have completed 60 credit hours of coursework, including ENGL 299; and not have exceeded 9 credit hours of independent study (including tutorials and independent studies).
