This course offers a survey of geophysical principles and techniques commonly used in geologic and oceanographic research and studies. Beach, estuarine and shelf processes are examined in detail. The importance of these processes to coastal management and protection is also addressed. The course includes laboratory where students will undertake a field study examining coastal processes and response as well as discuss relevant papers from the literature.   Weekly seminars will discuss and critique recent technical papers addressing coastal processes whose theoretical basis has been presented in corequisite Marine Science 565. The papers for each seminar will emphasize the Southeast United States Coastal Zone. Class field exercises will provide hands-on instruction and experience in the coastal processes shaping the South Carolina coastal.
