(3 credits)(Prereq: ENGL*101) Relying on the analysis of historical, anthropological, literary, and cinematic texts and adopting an intercultural perspective, this course explores representations of the Mafia in Italian and American cinema and TV series from the early 20th century to today. In addition to introducing students to essential character types, film techniques, and narrative conventions that distinguish the "mafia movie" from other related genres, this course raises key questions about cultural representations of power, stereotypes, migration, national identity, race, gender, class difference, anti-mafia activism, and social justice in rural and urban contexts.
