  Students will participate in public service within agencies in the Myrtle Beach area in order to understand civic responsibility and the role of higher education in promoting it. In their written work and class discussions, they will reflect on both the function of their service as well as on its limits as a response to specific community needs and more general social problems. Students will also explore issues of civic responsibility and citizenship in relation to the social problems that they become familiar with through their service work.

  (1)(Prereq: HRTM 101) The Guest Services I internship is a supervised work experience in which students are employed in a "heart-of-the-house" or support function within the context of the resort tourism industry. The specific work environment and student's job responsibilities must be approved, in advance, by supervising faculty. Students will be required to maintain a detailed journal relative to their workplace activities, establish specific learning goals, complete a reflective essay regarding the experience, and will be evaluated by their workplace supervisor.
