(Prereq: Grade of C or better in ENGL A101 and A102, Senior standing, minimum 3.0 GPA, completion of at least 12 hours at the 300 level or above, permission of instructor and department chair, and successful completion of the writing proficiency portfolio or ENGL A201). Directed independent research and writing project. The English major may choose to explore in depth a literary topic of special interest or to produce an original work and to place this work into the context of the appropriate tradition. Topic choice will be made by student and instructor with approval by department chair. The thesis of 25-30 pages (or equivalent as determined by the committee) will be defended before a committee of three faculty members, including the thesis director, the department chair and /or BIS director Writing Assessment Director, and one additional faculty member chosen by the student. All thesis students and their faculty directors will meet as a group during the semester for discussion of the process. A transcript designation, "Exceptional work on the senior thesis," may be given if recommended by the faculty thesis committee.
