This course provides an introduction to the financial markets (entities that sell stocks, bonds and foreign currencies) and the key financial institutions (banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, government entities etc.). Financial markets play a critical role in the efficient functioning of the market economy. The financial institutions are the organizations that allow the financial markets to function properly. This course teaches the fundamental ideas that govern interaction of these markets and the related institutions and why this matters for business. It will teach the inner workings of the Banking sector, the Federal Reserve and how they relate with financial intermediaries. Particular attention will be paid to risk management and how the various markets and institutions can fail to properly interact with each other.
