A seminar on an individual author, topic, or problem, as suggested by members of the faculty or by groups of English majors and subject to the approval of the department head in consultation with the instructor. The principal requirement of the course will be a long research paper that will test the student's ability effectively to research a topic and construct a complex argument based on that research.

ENGL 497: Tutorial in Literature

The Citadel
A study of select works of literature and/or film designed to meet the needs of a small group of high-achieving students, such as those in The Citadel Distinguished Scholars Program. Students meet individually or in pairs with their tutor, a member of the English faculty, every full week for hour-long tutorials, which alternate between discussions of assigned readings and participation in essay conferences that culminate in the production of a long research paper.
