The history of women's experiences, gender roles, and family life from the early Christian era to the Renaissance. Topics include femininity and masculinity and women's experiences in diverse occupations and life-cycle stages. Emphasis is placed on historians' use of sources such as law codes, court cases, chronicles, religious texts, financial accounts, and literature to paint pictures of the diverse lives lived during the middle ages.
