HIST 200 - Intro to Southern Studies

Institution:
Coastal Carolina University
Subject:
History
Description:
(3 credits) This survey course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the idea of southern identity by specifically investigating the history of the geographical region. We may explore the South as a way of life, investigating the cultural practices and traditions that have given the region its distinctive identity. We ask: "what is the South," "where is the South," and "who are Southerners," looking at how these identities and realities have evolved over time. This course introduces students to the craft and concepts involved in interdisciplinary knowledge production, and serves as an introductory course to the Southern Studies minor. Students are exposed to materials used in a multitude of disciplines and are asked to evaluate and interpret such documents as historical primary sources, memoirs, literary works, films, photographs, artifacts, music, and art.
