(3 credits) This course introduces the study of social media and online communication platforms, including their development and uses over time. Students learn both how current social media platforms and tools can be used to promot and spread information, ideas, and content for personal, social, political, or branding purposes, and how their uses have impacted individuals, institutions, and society. Topics may include social media history, industry, ethics, and design, as well as impacts on interpersonal communication, relationships, identity, business, entertainment, sports, health, journalism, and democracy.
