This course offers a critical examination of the social dynamics shaping race and ethnicity in the United States around issues of equity and inclusion. Students will examine both historic and contemporary problems and issues in the areas of racial and ethnic relations including the social construction of race, intersectionality, privilege, bias, institutional and individual-level discrimination, power relations and stratification. Emphasis is placed on the use of empirical evidence to evaluate popular beliefs regarding race and ethnicity.
