Description: A lecture course to develop a fundamental chemical understanding of modern environmental issues involving air, water, toxic substances, and energy. Students will be expected to demonstrate a technical literacy with issues such as photochemical smog formation, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, visibility and aerosols, toxic substances in the environment, water quality and treatment, pesticides, acute/chronic effects of toxic chemicals on humans, environmental tradeoffs involving current and alternative means of energy production, pollutant transport, and environmental problems facing rapidly growing metropolitan regions. Notes: Offered as needed.
