African American Theatre investigates the foundational African American presence in US theatre from the early nineteenth century to today. It does this through an examination of play texts, performances, theatre movements, and social history. To understand the political and aesthetic power of these plays, they must be viewed against a backdrop of racist performance practices, such as minstrelsy and blackface, which dominated the cultural landscape.
