This course examines mental health and illness using sociological theories and research. Students will learn how mental illness is defined and measured, examine the social factors that are associated with mental health and illness, and evaluate personal, community, and societal responses to mental illness. Students will explore mental illness as a social phenomenon and learn how mental illness is treated within the American health care system.
