(3 credits)(Prereq: SOC*101 or SOC*102) Using a sociological frame of analysis, this course explores distinctions between collective action and social movements, conditions that facilitate their development, and their impact on social, cultural, and political policies. A wide variety of social movements in American society are examined, including the Progressive era reform movements, the labor movement, the women's movement, the environmental movement, the gay rights movement, the civil rights and other racial/ethnic movements.
