A survey of music in American culture from Colonial times to present, with particular attention to the social setting for American music and the influence of European and African cultures on American music. The course will involve listening to and discussing representative compositions by American composers. In the first part of the course, particular attention will be paid to Charleston as a musical center before 1860.
