4-3-5 Offered Fall Semester Prerequisite: SUR 101 This course covers the principles and application of aseptic technique, the perioperative role, and medical/legal aspects. Also covers the study of biopsychosocial needs of the patient, preoperative routines, patient identification, transportation, review of the chart, consent transfer, positioning, skin preparation, case selection, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, preparation of sterile field, draping, preoperative case management, monitoring the sterile field, documentation, specimen care, intraoperative case management, abdominal incisions, tissue approximation, surgical dressings, death and dying, postoperative case management, electricity, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Campus lab experience will continue to develop perioperative skills emphasizing the intraoperative phase.
