Survey of western art music from 800 B.C. to 1600 A.D. Topics include music of ancient Greece and Rome; sacred music from the early Christian period through the Reformation; secular music from early monophony through the madrigal; the rise of instrumental music. Study of current bibliography. Emphasis on listening and analysis. Prerequisite: C or better in MUSI 201. Three semester hours.
