The social, political, cultural, and economic development of China from 1800 to the present, with an emphasis on the collapse of the late imperial social and political order and the struggle to modernize. Topics include the Opium Wars, the Boxer Rebellion, nationalism, feminism, Mao Zedong, the Cultural Revolution, democracy movements, and the One Child Policy. Prerequisite: HIST U101, HIST U102, HIST U105, HIST U106 or HIST U198; or consent of instructor.
